Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow

Do certain colours call your attention more than others?
Is there a certain hue of blue or green that you like better than its counterpart?
What colour do you find yourself reaching for more often in the closet in the mornings? or night?
Interestingly enough, and to no great surprise to many, different colours have unique meanings. This includes how we see them, project them, and allow them into our body and psyche.

A fairly simple book that I picked up at Chapters http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/home/ in the sale section is entitled Simply Color Therapy by Nina Ashby. It caught my eye since I am currently doing added research for another project of mine (more on that soon), but I thought it would be a worthy topic to write about here.

Ashby dives right into the descriptions of some main colours, such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, giving them full account for their place in the aura, their idiomatic expressions, their physical, emotional and mental associations, healing applications, and completes each description with a decorating and fashion bit. She doesn't exclude the polar opposites of white (all colours manifested at the same time) and black (all colours unmanifested) and those in between such as grey and brown.

Colour pervades our world. It's in advertising, products, our homes, streets, and it attracts or repels us for different reasons. Some colours will speak to some personal sensitivities while others have little effect. Marketing companies know and have done a lot of research on the "shades of meaning" and how they affect us. Even wonder why a product gets a "new and improved" label? It's very likely that it hasn't even changed other than the colour of its packaging in order to draw you in to buying it.

This colour theory applies to the famous phrase "Dress for Success". If we dress a certain way, we will attract certain types of attention, and we do have different preferences for leisure, business and play time clothes. However, depending on the area or field you work in (or would like to), there is likely a preferred palette, for no other reason than the message it conveys. For example, formal wear is often black, more conservative or authoritarian type jobs will often have navy as a the uniform colour, and white will convey a message of purity or cleanliness such as in the medical profession. Sports teams will often have red on their uniforms to instill a sense of speed and action, while purple is a colour that exudes power and has often been seen worn by royals. So if you want to give off a "regal" appearance, you know what to colour to wear. *wink*.

No matter what colour you are drawn to, it is a very personal experience, but it is thought that colours do share common effects on people. Red, for example, has held its association with passion, anger, sex, and vigor, and is used often to express or provoke such types of emotions. Bright yellow is often associated with joy, inspiration and optimism, and it is used in rooms where discussion and intellect is stimulated, however, most shades of yellow cause "confusion by the mind overpowering the emotions" as well as prejudice or worry.

All the colour laws also apply to decor and one's surroundings. It is a worthy exercise to play with a box of crayons or water colours once in a while to get back in touch with the full spectrum. Many of our colour choices could tell us a bit about what mood we are in and whether we wish to swap it for a different one.

There is also colour association to our Chakras. For more information on chakras you can visit http://www.chakraenergy.com/ . Therefore it is very symbolic and healing for the corresponding colour to be used when attempting to activate or heal a certain area of the body. In the case of a weak thymus (the thymus is largely responsible for the immune system) and is associated with the heart chakra, the colour green should be used for creating good feelings which help us create strong immunity. "Green is the colour of nature, nurture and trust".

It is equally thought that having all of one's chakras in perfect balance and harmony will result in a wonderful physical, mental and spiritual life.
No wonder we were given all the colours of the rainbow to play with, so we could experience all the feelings brought on by them.
